Retiring from canoeing doesn’t mean retiring from adventure. Whether it’s hiking across expansive tundra, observing wildlife in its natural habitat, or casting a line into crystal-clear waters, there are endless opportunities to connect with nature and continue exploring the wilderness in new ways.
Discover the Beauty of Canada’s North
Canada’s North holds a special allure. One area in particular tends to leave a profound impression to those who have ventured to experience it – the barrens, its effects instill a desire for people to return, while simultaneously beckoning others looking for a unique adventure. The Coppermine River flows through this area via a system of lakes, and sections of river as it flows to the Arctic Ocean. Point Lake is notably the largest lake on this system.
The landscapes here are vast and varied. One of the most remarkable features of Canada’s northern wilderness is the transition from the taiga to the tundra, a landscape where the boreal forest gradually thins and gives way to open expanses of tundra. Here, arctic and subarctic plants and animals mingle, creating a unique ecosystem found only in this part of the world. It’s a place where the rhythms of nature are unbroken, and the seasons bring striking transformations to the land.
By venturing out on foot, by boat, or simply taking in the sweeping views, you can still feel that deep connection to the land and its untamed beauty. Exploring this region offers the chance to discover some of the most remote and captivating parts of the world. Peterson’s Point Lake Lodge provides a gateway to the barrens and our trips take you into the heart of this unique area.
Hiking Adventures, Nature Exploration & Wildlife Photography
The hiking opportunities here are tremendous. The rolling hills, eskers and lack of trees provide excellent hiking and offer vantage points to observe the breath-taking landscape. After summiting one of the hills, you won’t be able to stop your curiosity from wanting to discover what over the next. Overall, hiking is relatively easy, though longer walks will expose hikers to varying conditions.
Guided walks from Peterson’s Point Lake Lodge or via boat ride to scenic hiking area offer time to observe and learn about the diversity of plants, see wildlife and/or look for signs of grizzly bear, moose, caribou, wolverine, wolf, fox, ground squirrel and weasel. There may even be opportunities to take a swim as well.

It’s an opportunity to see the subtle beauty of the tundra up close, from the tiniest flowering plants to the sweeping panoramas of the northern landscape. Along the way, you can sample edible berries like crowberries, cloudberries and cranberries. It goes without saying that the region offers incredible photography opportunities particularly when the fall colors paint the landscape in rich reds, oranges, and yellows.
